Cardiology Fellowship Training Program

 

Program Description

The fellowship in cardiology at Northside Hospital & Tampa Bay Heart Institute is designed to provide the learner with high quality instruction and experience in all aspects of cardiovascular disease. The program will be 36 months in duration. Fellows may be accepted into the program only after successfully completing three years of Internal Medicine Residency thereby becoming Board Eligible for Internal Medicine. Training may include a Specialty Track Internal Medicine internship. The Base Training Institution will be Northside Hospital & Tampa Bay Heart Institute of St. Petersburg, Florida. Continuity outpatient clinic training will be provided at the base teaching site as well as at affiliate sites (in the ambulatory care facilities of the trainers).

 

Academic Environment

The curriculum includes a core of didactics, which are molded after the core competencies in the COCATS document. These didactics will be delivered through the cardiovascular lecture series presented by trainers, cardiovascular fellows, cardiac catheterization conferences, cardiovascular conferences, journal club, and daily academic rounds on all rotations.

 

Patient Care Experience

The program provides extensive instruction and participation in clinical cardiac patient care services. Fellows will be exposed to a variety of cardiac clinical settings including Percutaneous Coronary Intervention, Electrophysiology, Pacemaker /ICF/Atrial Flutter and Atrial Fib Ablations/ Arrhythmia management, Tilt table procedures, and Cardiac Stress Testing. Northside Hospital is the base hospital for training with other facilities utilized as warranted by the Curriculum.

 

Curriculum

The core curriculum is based on the recommendations of the American College of Cardiology COCATS training document. The program is designed to provide educational and experiential input from a broad range of specialty providers at Northside Hospital & Tampa Bay Heart Institute as well as affiliate institutions. At the successful completion of the program, the fellow will have received adequate instruction and experience to qualify for Level 2* skills in general cardiology, cardiac catheterization, echocardiography, stress testing, pacemaker implantation with follow up, and basic nuclear cardiology and electrophysiology.

 

Schedule

Fellows complete a 36 month training program. Working hours are generally 7 am to 7 pm, with pager call approximately every 3rd night. Fellows receive a total of 15 days of paid time off which can be used for vacation, personal needs, and holidays. Fellows are also allowed a total of 5 days of paid time for continuing medical education and conference attendance.

 

Application Procedures

Fellowship candidates will complete the application provided by the Department of Medical Education at Northside Hospital & Tampa Bay Heart Institute. Original or notarized copies of the internship certificate and the Osteopathic Medical School transcript must be submitted with the application and other required documentation. In addition, three letters of recommendation, including one from the Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program, must be provided. A minimum of three evaluations from internal medicine attendings, for rotations spent on their services, also must be provided.

 

Qualified applicants may request an interview or may be asked to interview on site at Northside Hospital & Tampa Bay Heart Institute. Most interviews are conducted on Fridays however we attempt to accommodate the applicant’s schedule whenever possible. When scheduling an interview please allow ample time to assemble and schedule the interviewers so that a productive interview can take place.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis once all applications are deemed complete. Successful applicants will be notified in mail and be asked to accept the position by completing a letter of intent. Upon receiving a letter of intent signed by the accepted applicant, a contract will be forthcoming usually within 14 days. All candidates who submitted a completed application and were not selected will be notified in writing as soon as possible.
